LONDON>>Union adds to tube strike threat

A decision will today be made on whether union members will strike over plans to close London Underground ticket offices.

The Rail Maritime and Transport union will announce the result of a ballot for industrial action over the proposals.

Members of the Transport Salaried Staffs Association will also vote in the coming weeks on whether to launch a campaign of action in protest at the closure of all 260 Tube ticket offices, with the loss of hundreds of jobs.

We would like to start by pointing out that the formal (capitalist) economy actually makes up a very small part of the total economy of a country. The bigger part of the economy consists of non-commodity activities and exchanges such as the capacity to cooperate, to show solidarity, to love, to live in peace, etc.

MALAYSIA>>72% of RENESAS workers vote in favour of UNION - finally recognition after almost 4 year struggle

The Electronic Industry Employees Union Western Region, Peninsular Malaysia (EIEUWR)/ Kesatuan Sekerja Industri Elektronik Wilayah Barat Semenjung  Malaysia(KSIEWBSM) was victorious in the 'secret ballot' when about 72% of the qualified workers at RENESAS Semiconductor KL Sdn Bhd (formerly known as NEC Semiconductors (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd]voted in favour of the Union. The Union will now be recognized, and soon would be able to begin negotiations for a Collective Bargaining Agreement. The almost 4 year struggle for recognition is over, and we do hope that RENESAS would also do the right thing and reinstate immediately Wan Noorulazhar, the President of the Union.

It would have so much better if employers, like RENESAS, respected worker and trade union rights and immediately accorded recognition to the UNION since 2010 - but sadly, there was resistance to the UNION and thus the need for a 'secret ballot'.

KUALA LUMPUR: Several civil society groups handed over a memorandum to the Cambodian embassy today, protesting the neighbouring country’s recent violent crackdown on workers striking for higher wages.

Representatives from Dignity International, Asia Floor Wage Alliance, Persatuan Sahabat Wanita Selangor, Committee for Asian Women, Jerit, MTUC, Suaram and Junior Officers Union Tenaga Nasional Berhad submitted the letter to Chhay Kosal, third secretary (Consular and Administration) at the embassy.

KUALA LUMPUR: Kongres Kesatuan Pekerja-pekerja Dalam Perkhidmatan Awam (Cuepacs) pada Khamis mencadangkan kerajaan menaikkan kadar gaji minimum penjawat awam kepada RM1,200 bagi mengimbangi kos sara hidup yang semakin meningkat.

Presidennya, Azih Muda berkata berdasarkan analisis Cuepacs, kos sara hidup yang meningkat antara lapan dan 10 peratus sekarang memberi tekanan kepada penjawat awam khususnya yang tinggal di kawasan bandar besar, memandangkan kenaikan gaji sektor awam hanya sekitar dua hingga 2.5 peratus.
